Announcing Georgia Tech students are available to collect time study data at your exercise

Announcing Georgia Tech students are available to collect time study data at your exercise.

The Modeling & Simulation Group of the Division of Strategic National Stockpile has received funding to work with Georgia Tech’s Industrial and Systems Engineering Department to support state and local public health exercises. Many of you may have seen the RealOpt optimization/simulation software on last week’s webinar. The great news is we now have some funding to allow Georgia Tech students to travel to your upcoming POD and/or RSS Exercises to gather time study data for improving POD and RSS operations.

If your exercise is selected, we will cover the travel, lodging and per diem costs to have approximately four PhD candidates to collect time study data. This is what can be expected:

•The students may participate in your post exercise “hot wash” if requested.

•The students will provide you a written, thorough analysis of the exercise within 30 days.

•The students can also provide training to the POD and/or RSS Managers and planners on how to properly gather time study data to increase the accuracy of measurements and improve POD /RSS planning efforts.

The results will not be used to “rate” your exercise.

If you are planning a POD, immunization clinic, regional node or RSS exercise, or actual operation of one or more, and you would like to participate in the time study data collection efforts, please contact your CDC Program Services Consultant or email me directly at eoj3@cdc.gov with the dates and locations of your exercises so we can add your area to this year’s schedule.
As Promised, We are Rebroadcasting the RealOpt© POD Modeling Software Webinar

As Promised, We are Rebroadcasting the RealOpt© POD Modeling Software Webinar

Save the Date!
September 16, 2009
2:00 – 2:45 PM ET

This year’s influenza season will be an extremely challenging one for public health departments throughout the country, especially if the H1N1 influenza strain gains greater virulence. With this in mind, CDC’s Division of the Strategic National Stockpile (DSNS) will conduct a webinar on RealOpt© modeling and optimization software to assist in designing vaccination clinics that run more efficiently and achieve desired throughput rates while operating with fewer staff. The live webinar will include opportunities to ask subject matter experts specific questions on how to use RealOpt© to design points of dispensing (PODs) and vaccination clinics.

Georgia Institute of Technology’s RealOpt©
RealOpt© is a modeling and optimization software tool that can assist you in planning for operations in PODs, vaccination clinics, and treatment centers. This software was developed by the Center for Operations Research in Medicine and HealthCare, School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology.

RealOpt© uses time-study data collected from PODs and vaccination, immunization, and treatment clinic operations during both real-world events and exercises. RealOpt© provides POD/clinic managers with an effective decision-support system for real-time resource allocation within PODs and clinics. It couples high-speed optimization algorithms and large-scale simulation into a single software decision system.

Using the models created with RealOpt© will help POD and clinic planners maximize throughput and minimize the average time patients spend in the POD or clinic. RealOpt© provides state and local public health planners with the capabilities to:

•	Design customized and efficient POD and clinic floor plans using an automatic graph-drawing tool
•	Determine optimal labor resources required and provide the most efficient placement of staff at individual stations within the POD or clinic
•	Equalize staff utilization across POD/clinic stations
•	Perform disease propagation analysis
•	Assess current resources and determine minimum needs for the regional population
•	Allow large-scale virtual drills and performance data analysis of operations

More information, including the web address of the webinar, will be provided in a follow-up List Serv message and posted to the DSNS website at http://bt.cdc.gov/extranet.
